What they say must be true; great minds really do think alike! Paul Denovan and Andy Matsinos created a vision where concrete, innovative design and plants come alive. Made by Flint is a Melbourne based business shaped by two very clever boys who gives us insight into technical and unique ways in which we see and use concrete.

What does a day in a life of Flint Designs involve?

We like to brainstorm new ideas all the time, thinking up new shapes and colour combos to make. We’re always on the lookout for succulents, making regular trips to Bunnings and various nurseries to see if there are any that we don’t have (and we have a lot). The actual making of the planters usually happens late at night with the help of music and beers.

Why was concrete your source of creation?

We like the versatility of it, you can pretty much pour it into any shape if you have the mold which is cool. When we first started buying lots of plants (mainly succulents) we decided it was going to be more economical to start making concrete pots, and then we got creative from there. We love the raw industrial look of the material as well; you never really know what the surface finish is going to be like which is always interesting.

Tell us, what or who inspires you?

Seeing a lot of geometric design around inspires us a lot. We’re always trying to see what is trending and what people like but we also like to be inspired ourselves by what we make. I think we’re pretty lucky to be living in Melbourne where there is such a large culture of handmade design.

Do you have certain customers in mind when you’re designing?

We’ve discovered as we’ve gone along that there are certain demographics that are more likely to purchase and be interested in our products which has had an effect on how we have gone about presenting our brand. We look at various design based shops and online stores to see what people are liking and keep that in mind as well.

What’s on the horizon for Flint?

We’re hoping to do some more markets, having just been a part of The Finders Keepers Melbourne markets which was an incredible experience. We’ve had a few wholesale enquiries as well for some little stores that stock handmade wares which is pretty exciting!
